Skyfall is once again the box leader, reclaiming the top spot after three weeks in the top five. The newest addition to the Bond series earned an additional $11 million over the weekend, bringing its total gross earnings to $261.million.
“I’ve never seen this exact trajectory on a movie — returning to first place after dropping out three weeks ago,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com. “It transcends being just a typical Bond movie, it’s crossed over to fans who want to see a good movie that has some Oscar potential.”
Skyfall is poised to become Sony’s highest-grossing movie in over five years, a record currently held by The Amazing Spider-Man.
Rise of the Guardians rose from third place to second this weekend with earnings of $10.5 million. Last week’s box office champion, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, placed third with a weekend haul of $9.2 million. Lincoln and Life of Pi round out the top five with respective earnings of $9.1 and $8.3 million.
Playing for Keeps, the only new release this weekend, debuted at number six with $6 million in ticket sales. Starring Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Judy Greer, and Dennis Quaid, Playing for Keeps is about a coach relentlessly pursued by a bunch of hot soccer moms.
Seventh place goes to Wreck-It Ralph with a weekend take of $4.9 million. Red Dawn, Flight, and Killing Them Softly close out the top ten with respective earnings of $4.2, $3.1, and $2.7 million.
Friday brings the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Check back next week to find out how the highly-anticipated film fares at the box office.
